Jazztofunk: “I never ever heard a wall of sounds like this again”

This Hamburg Groove Master has been spinning for about 25 years. Inspired by what you and I would expect but also Depeche Mode, Jazztofunk initiated the Hamburg Funk Allnighter a few years back. My home town is still grateful for this annual Funk Frenzy at the legendary Mojo Club. Listen to his mix here and find out more about him as part of Our “DJs you should know” series.

Which style / genre do you mostly play:
From jazz to Funk and in between

Residency (current or previous):
Hamburg Funk Allnighter (Mojo Club)

DJ gig farthest away from your home:
London (Lockstock Festival), Wiesbaden

Most memorable DJ gig and why?
Reeperbahn Festival 2006 (Prinzenbar). Harry K. (Apollo 440, Urban Delights), Dropout, Zetzschmo and me were rocking the crowd so hard. Absolutely amazing.

Since when have you been a DJ?
Since around 25 years

What was your first ever record?
The first album I bought was Fischer-Z – “Going deaf for living”. The first 7” as far as I remember was Depeche Mode – “Dreaming of me”

Favourite record of all times and why?
Paul Weller – “Paul Weller (Solo debut)”
I love The Jam and also The Style Council. After the TSC split I thought Mr. Weller will never ever top “All Mod Cons” and “Our Favorite Shop”. Wrong! His first solo album was the perfect mix of his band projects. It is funky, got the rock in it, takes you on a psychedelic trip and has much more soul than many of the so called soul artists in recent time. For me it’s an absolutely masterpiece.

Record that surprised you most and why?
Depeche Mode – “Songs of faith and devotion”
I’m a DM fan since their first single. They were so influential for the whole electronic music scene. But then…guitars, real drums, gospel…and surprise surprise, it worked perfect. I never ever heard a wall of sounds like this again. This record comes straight behind Wellers debut. Absolutely killer!

Record you usually play at all your DJ gigs:
The Style Council – “My ever changing moods”

Vinyl or other media:
Vinyl and for very commercial gigs sometimes Serato

Favourite club to play at:
Goldener Salon (Hafenklang)

Your favourite DJ:
Eddie Piller, DJ Format

Band / Musician you strongly recommend everyone should listen to:
Paul Weller, The Specials, Depeche Mode, James Brown
